Lupus Biomarkers

So as many of you all know I'm a Lupus Research supporter and Advocate. Today I received a research update newsletter and was happy to hear about some progress.....

Lupus is a very widespread but relatively unknown autoimmune disease. Doctors and researchers alike do not really have any idea about why some people get Lupus and others with the same risk factors do not. To understand this better we need to have some Biomarkers.

Biomarkers are specific chemicals in the body that doctors can track the start of, the progress, and the potential treatment of a disease. For example, in the last decade when researchers and doctors starting learning more about the Biomarkers for breast cancer, we learned that women in their 40s should have regular momograms. We also learned more about what genes were linked with later cancer development, etc.

To my pleasure, the Department of Defense (god knows why they are funding this research but bless their hearts none the less) is funding a well known research center to start identifying and researching the Lupus Biomarkers!!!! Yeah yeah yeah! This makes me really really happy!!!

We need to continue doing this important research and advocating for money so that we can continue to learn more about autoimmune diseases!
